KSP Spring Story Retreat: Applications Open

August 7, 2018

Writing is hard when the dishes need doing. It's tough when there's a TV or tablet oh so close, and you won't watch for too long, just an episode, and then it's 10pm, you have to work tomorrow, and you didn't write a single thing.

Thankfully, the good folk at KSP here in Perth, Western Australia, have invited me back to run their Spring Story Retreat…

I'm running short story workshops and masterclasses for The Perth Writers Festival and The Katharine Susannah Prichard Foundation in February, 2015, as listed below. Both workshops deliver skills that can be immediately applied to your work, and in many cases, result in more dynamic, natural fiction that's willing to take educated risks in the pursuit of literary excellence. Update, January 29th: Tickets for the Perth Writers Festival workshop are selling fast, so you'll need to be quick if you wish to attend. For those writers living in Melbourne, I'll be running a one-day masterclass for Writers Victoria in June, 2015. For more information on that and all the courses offered by Writers Victoria, head here . Advanced Fiction Workshop Perth Writers Festival Friday 20th February, 2015 The creation of innovative, memorable short fiction is never accidental – it is the result of thematic consistency, authenticity of voice and careful choices in story style, format and structure. Award-winning short-story writer Laurie Steed explores advanced elements of the genre, such as interlinking narratives, subtext and non-linear approaches to time within the narrative framework. Where: Fox Lecture Theatre, University of Western Australia When: 2pm, Friday 20th February, 2015 For more information, click here . Short Story Master Class Katharine Susannah Prichard House Tuesday 26 February, 2015 Great short fiction requires any number of elements to be in place before it can be truly effective. These elements include plot, character, conflict and the writer's choice of perspective, but these elements alone will not guarantee a compelling narrative. Using exercise and examples from short story masters including Tobias Wolff and Jhumpa Lahiri, participants will explore more advanced elements in crafting quality (and ultimately, more publishable) short fiction. By the end, you will have a fresh perspective on your existing stories and indeed a greater understanding of what it takes to write truly compelling short fiction. Where: KSP Writers Centre, 11 Old York Road, Greenmount, Western Australia When: 6.30-9.30pm, Tuesday, 26th February For more information, click here . Advance bookings are essential for all KSP events; please email kspf@iinet.net.au or phone 08 9294 1872.

In May, 2014, I travelled to Iowa, USA in pursuit of a lifelong dream. In March, 2019, I’ll be heading to Melbourne thanks to @writersvictoria for a one-day workshop to help many more follow their local, national and global residency dreams. Link is in the bio: bookings now open, and hope to see you there. #melbourneworkshops #writingworkshops #followyourbliss
