Are you working on a short story for submission? Revising fiction for a competition entry?
The Shorter Story Pulse Check is a close read of your work. You'll receive a written report of up to five pages covering structure, voice, and what's 'rattling' beneath the surface. I'll include in-text queries where the writing needs attention, and after you've read the report, we'll do a round of email feedback together.
This service is also available for personal essays and creative non-fiction. Use the same booking link and flag the work as non-fiction in the notes when uploading.

Writing can be a solitary business, and yet it's often in collaboration that we take the next necessary steps. If you'd like to work together, tell me about your project and we'll start the conversation.
What’s Included?
A 'What to Expect' guide sent through at the time of your booking.
A written report of up to fifteen pages exploring key threads of the book such as plot, character, narrative tension, voice and point-of-view, as well as suitability for publication and specific areas as directed by the author at the time of the initial consultation. Also included are potential areas for development and improvement in the work and ways to better meet the expectations of publishers and other industry professionals.
A follow-up online consultation once the report has been sent to further discuss my thoughts and feedback. In addition to seeking clarification on any key points, this also gives the writer a chance to ask any questions they might have, and for the assessor to ensure the writer’s clear on next steps and necessarily confident heading back to the work at hand.
Expert advice, insight and encouragement to help you develop as a writer and take one step closer to reaching your goal and full-length publication.
All consultations and debriefs are conducted online. Perth-based clients are welcome to request an in-person debrief for an additional $150. Just get in touch with me and we’ll arrange a time and place.

Testimonials
I can help you reach the next level in your writing career
With over twenty-five years' experience in writing, teaching, mentoring and manuscript assessment, I've become something of a story mechanic.
I pull stories apart to discover what's 'rattling', make observations, ask questions, and give writers tips on how to put their stories back together, now without the aspects that had originally stopped them reaching their destination. My insights have helped countless writers become published authors, and they can work for you too.
I provide manuscript assessments to writers because in my experience they're deeply valuable to the writers who request them. They've also often been the difference-maker between writers I've met who've achieved debut full-length publications, and those who haven't. To find success as writers, we must get better as writers. Manuscript assessments are a great way to do this in a safe, supportive setting with the focus, always, on your unique creative vision.
Laurie worked closely with me on the early manuscript of Three Boys Gone, at a point where I was unsure of how to tell the story as a coherent whole. His insights and understanding of how a novel evolves as you write it were invaluable. He was able to offer an honest critique without overwhelming me with the amount of work that needed to be done. It was exactly what I needed at the time. His knowledge and expertise were critical in the journey to publication.
